Vinyl French patio doors sold against a 2,400 Pa rating are being judged on a 62 m/s gust, and the part that decides whether that rating holds is a 2,100 mm meeting stile with five lock points, not the frame. Everything else on the door is easier to copy.
From pascals back to wind
Wind pressure p = 0.625 x v squared. At v = 62 m/s, p = 0.625 x 3,844 = 2,403 Pa. Run it the other way and 2,400 Pa is 61.97 m/s, or 223 km/h. That is a tropical cyclone gust, not a design load, which is why the number on the brochure tells you very little about a hotel balcony in a temperate city.

In this guide:
Sixty-two metres per second, which is a cyclone gust rather than a building load. For a hotel on a temperate coast the design gust is usually well under half of that, so a pair rated at 2,400 Pa is not the constraint on the project. The constraint is the pressure at which the leaf starts to move enough to break the seal, and that is a much lower number.
The class structure is worth knowing because it tells you what to ask for. EN 12210 runs from 400 Pa to 2,000 Pa in five steps, and the test is a sustained pressure plus a safety pressure at one and a half times the class value. Ask three things: which class was reached, at what deflection, and whether the sample was glazed to the order. A rating achieved on a sample with a different glass build does not transfer, and the same is true of a pair chosen for the wrong climate, which is the point of the notes on vinyl French doors by climate.
At the meeting stile, every time. The frame perimeter sits against a gasket that is compressed by the hinges and the lock, but where the two leaves meet there is nothing but the rebate and whatever sealing strip was fitted to it. Air through a slit scales with the cube of the gap, so the difference between a 0.5 mm joint and a 0.2 mm joint is not two and a half times, it is fifteen and a half times.
That is why the astragal matters more than the profile chamber count. A multi-chamber profile with a bare rebate leaks at the one line where two thirds of the door height sits, and no amount of glazing specification recovers it. On a hotel balcony the consequence is not comfort, it is the air-conditioning load in a room that is let 300 nights a year. A slider trades this joint for an interlock, which is why the comparison in sliding French door efficiency comes down to which joint can actually be sealed.
| Meeting stile detail | Joint it leaves | Leak ratio | Where it holds | Added cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebate only, no strip | 0.5 mm | 15.6 x | sheltered courtyard, mild climate | baseline |
| Rebate plus EPDM bubble strip | 0.2 mm | 1.0 x | most coastal and city sites | one strip per leaf |
| Double rebate plus astragal with bulb | 0.1 mm | 0.125 x | exposed elevations, hotel balconies | second rebate on the stile |
Leak ratio is the cube of the gap ratio, taken against the middle row. Absolute leakage also depends on the pressure and the length of the joint line, so the ratio is what is being compared here, not a flow in m3/h. Calculated, not measured.

Five puts a compression point about every 525 mm. Three puts them 1,050 mm apart, and the deflection of the strip between two points scales with the fourth power of that distance, so doubling the spacing multiplies the movement by sixteen. The strip does not leak because the lock is weak; it leaks because there is nothing holding it shut in the middle of the bay.
Two more numbers belong in the clause. A 900 by 2,100 leaf in 4-16-4 carries about 30 kg of glass alone, and on vinyl french patio doors the lower hinge is where a pair starts to drop, because it takes that mass plus the profile and the steel every time the leaf swings. And the handle force has to stay under about 100 N with the door pulled shut against its own gasket, or staff will stop closing it fully and the seal will do nothing at all.

It turns four pieces into one. The mitre is cut, the faces are heated and pressed, and the profile fuses across the joint, which is what lets a 2,100 mm leaf hang from its hinges without the corners opening up over a season. A screwed or crimped corner relies on the fastener staying tight in a material that moves with temperature, and it does not stay tight. Vinyl french patio doors are judged on this joint more than on any other single detail.
On a sample, look at three things at the corner: whether the weld bead is continuous on the outside face, how deep the weld has been cleaned back inside the rebate, and whether the steel reinforcement runs through the corner or stops short of it. A steel insert that stops 100 mm before the mitre leaves the weld carrying the whole leaf, which is the single most common reason a cheap pair feels solid in the showroom and slack in year two. The same joint is used on UPVC French doors, so the check transfers.
Handing and swing direction per unit, the meeting stile detail by name rather than by picture, the number of lock points, the glass build with the argon fill stated, the threshold height and where it drains, the RAL or laminate reference, and the packing method for a pair that ships as a prehung set. A pair asked for as two loose leaves arrives as two loose leaves and is assembled on site by whoever is there.
If the balcony schedule is already fixed, send the leaf sizes, the handing and the exposure of the elevation to kristin@haolvbuilding.com and the stile detail, the lock points and the threshold can be set against those numbers rather than against a catalogue pair.
Hose the meeting stile, not the frame. Stand a metre back at 45 degrees and run water for five minutes with the door shut and locked, then open it and look at the inside face of the rebate: water there means the strip is not compressing, whatever the certificate says. Then close a sheet of paper in the joint at three heights and pull: it should resist at all three.
Last, work it. Twenty open and close cycles by hand, then check the astragal for a polished rub mark and the lower hinge for any drop. A pair that rubs at cycle twenty rubs through the strip by year two, and the strip is not a part that gets replaced on a hotel balcony without taking the leaf off. Where the balcony has no floor for that arc, sliding French doors take the same glass without the swing, and the seal moves to an interlock that is checked the same way.

What is the minimum order and lead time for custom vinyl french patio doors? Minimum order is 10-20 units and lead time is 25-30 days from drawing approval. A pair made to a non-standard leaf size or a different stile detail still runs inside that window, because the change is in the cutting list, not in the tooling.
Does the astragal add much to the unit price? It is one strip and, on the double rebate version, one extra pass on the stile. It is the cheapest energy measure on the door, and the one most often left out of a quotation that is being compared on unit price alone.
Can the pair be supplied with one fixed leaf? Yes, and it is worth doing on a balcony that is used as a walk-through rather than as a door. A fixed leaf takes the same frame and the same glass, drops the lock and hinge cost, and removes the meeting stile as a leak path entirely.
Which glass suits a hotel balcony facing the sea? Laminated on the inner pane at ground and balcony level, and a low-e coating on the face that sees the sun. Salt attacks hardware and seals rather than glass, so the specification that matters outdoors is the finish on the hinges and the strip quality, not the coating.
Haolv Building Materials Co., Ltd. has been making doors and windows for 19 years, vinyl french patio doors among them, with the stile detail, the lock points and the threshold set per project rather than taken from a standard pair. Certification for the profiles and the glazing is available on request with the quotation. Minimum order is 10-20 units and lead time is 25-30 days.
Send the balcony schedule, the handing and the site exposure to kristin@haolvbuilding.com, or start from the product page at Haolv Building Materials Co., Ltd. and the pair will be quoted with the stile and lock detail written out.
What this guide does and does not claim: the wind pressures, the gap ratios and the glass mass of vinyl french patio doors are calculated from the standard pressure relation, the cube law for slit flow and the standard glass weight of 2.5 kg per square metre per millimetre. They are not test results from a specific pair. The tested wind figure quoted for this product family is a family figure and is confirmed per order against the glass build actually specified.

Wind pressures, gap ratios and masses in this guide are calculated from published constants and standard relations. They are arithmetic, not measurements from a specific pair, and the tested figure for the product family is confirmed per order.
